A remote indigenous community

Punmu is an ongoing community development partnership with a remote indigenous community at the edge of the Western Desert in North Western Australia. Margaret River Rotary works with the community through its RAWA School and Community Council. Rotarians have visited many times, driving for several days via Port Hedland to get there and also with valuable fly-in travel assistance from Newcrest Mining’s Telfer operation. They have worked with and mentored Punmu community members while installing an ablutions block, painting and refurbishing. In partnership with the Punmu Community Council and Department of Sport and Recreation, Rotary Margaret River coordinated and assisted with installation of a new surface to the basketball court that supports the schools sport to breakfast to class school attendance incentive as well as providing a shade sale over the facility to turn it into a multi-purpose community sport, social activities and music venue.
